Yixing pottery dates back many centuries and is produced only in China. The craftsmanship alone is not all that makes these pieces unique – the very clay from which they are formed is specific to only a few mines in the vicinity of Yixing, China (just northwest of Shanghai). This clay contains quantities of iron, quartz and mica, and produces wares that are both very strong as well as very resistant to heat.

Yixing ware is also unique in that the craftsmen do not typically glaze the pots and cups that they make from this clay. Instead, they are allowed to retain their natural porosity. Because of this, your Yixing pot will become seasoned by the teas that you brew in them. It is said that one should be able to simply pour hot water into a high quality antique Yixing teapot and be able to pour out a drinkable tea without the addition of any tea leaf! Through constant use and handling, your Yixing ware will develop a smooth sheen that will only enhance the unique beauty of the item. Each piece, with care, is certain to become a treasured family heirloom that can be used by many generations to come.
